Do you ever wonder how items like water bottles, plastic toys, bottle caps, and hair combs are made? Items that we use every day and that we take for granted are made possible by a highly complex manufacturing process known as plastic injection molding. Plastic injection molding starts with raw plastic material, both new and recycled. While plastic injection molding companies try to use recycled plastics as often as possible, it does make the plastic less stable, so using recycled plastics is not the best option for some applications. When recycled plastic is used, both new and recycled plastics are melted together at very high temperatures. The melted plastics are slowly mixed together until they reach the right consistency. Once the plastics have been heated to the right temperature, they are ready to be forced into casts. The casts used in the plastic injection molding process are made from steel. These casts are incredibly sturdy and are capable of withstanding tons of force, which is exactly the kind of force required to push melted plastics into them. Once the plastic has been forced into a cast, it is cooled. As it cools it begins to harden and solidify.
Once the plastic has sufficiently cooled, it is ejected from the cast and allowed to cool completely. Thanks to the plastic injection molding process, we are able to make items in great quantities within a very short period of time. Plus, since plastic injection molding is a relatively inexpensive manufacturing process, many useful items can be made at low cost. While plastic injection molding is used to make things like toys and car parts, it is also used to make medical equipment that saves lives everyday. Thanks to plastic injection molding, we are able to create many items that would be impossible to make otherwise.
