We have all heard about the economy. Maybe you are even getting sick of hearing about its dismal status. Sometimes though I think that we forget how it is affecting virtually every aspect of businesses. Let me tell you that I know first hand that the poor economy is affecting moving companies. I was actually working for a moving company during 2008. I got the job because I knew the main mover and the boss from a previous job. I witnessed firsthand how the economy was affecting small business. I also saw how the poor economy was affecting a moving company. Less and less jobs were coming in as most people turned towards a DITY move. We did, however, start to see an increase in partial moves, as I call them. Many people moving would hire the company I worked for, but only for a few items. Their DITY move consisted of them moving everything that they were physically able to move. Then they called us in to move, for example, a refrigerator and a washer and dryer set. Sure, it was not a true Dity move. But not everyone has access to the tools we had at our disposal. We had the best straps and dolleys, not to mention strong and able bodies. I witnessed varying degrees of a DITY move. Some people would hire us for the truck, and they would even load it up themselves. Again, not a true DITY move, but as opposed to someone who does nothing, it was up there in my book. I even remember one husband and wife couple that hired us to help them move. Their DITY move consisted of them working right along side us. It was interesting to see their version of a DITY move. Perhaps they just figured it would go so much quicker with everyone working together, and if they helped it would cut down their fee. It is almost impossible to do a true DITY move, so I would just go with one of the examples I gave to make life a little easier for yourself.
