We recently remodeled our small row house in the city. We initially hoped to begin the project two years before it actually was able to start. Thanks to the bureaucracy that goes along with living in an historic district in a big city, the permit process delayed us quite a bit. Two years later, the project was set to begin in mid Winter. We were bumping out the back of the house on three levels. They had to excavate the basement portion by hand and would be knocking down one hundred year old brick. All I knew is that it was going to be messy. We had to seal off the rooms at the back of the house. Everything in the rooms beyond that would be in the construction zone. A moving storage container was our best option to house the belongings from those spaces. I wish we would have just moved all our things out and into storage. Everything was covered in dust for months and months.
We rented one of those outdoor moving storage boxes. It was brought to our door. It was a big metal thing they moved around with this wheeled contraption. We packed up the kitchen and our master bedroom and took our time moving it out to the storage box. It was in our backyard and we thought it could stay there the whole time the house was being remodeled. There was so much construction material and paraphernalia in our dinky yard that the container had to go. We were sad, because we looked forward to just being able to dust that thing off, open the door and unload our belongings back into the house when it was finished. The moving storage company was so very helpful, in spite of our reluctance. They took our storage container within a day of calling them.
We figured that our belongings would be inaccessible once the moving storage company put it in their storage facility. But all we had to do was call a day in advance and we could access it. The moving storage warehouse was climate controlled and set up with security surveillance cameras. We also were able to keep the key to our container. We ended up visiting the storage box a few times to look for things we hastily packed, add some items and repack in anticipation for the return delivery.
We were very happy that our belongings were not in the yard and were safely stored with the moving storage people. Just like the remodeling magazines warn you about, our builders finally finished more than 5 months later than they thought they would. It was hectic enough to just get settled back into the house. So we dreaded the idea of having to make time for moving our storage box back home. Those moving storage people took the burden off us, once again. We called and had that thing delivered within a day. We were anxious to get our yard back to normal, so hoped that steel container did not have to hang out there long. We scheduled them to take it away that same afternoon. We unloaded it and got back to cleaning. Later that evening, we noticed our yard was no longer muddled with a big metal moving storage box and construction debris. It is amazing how quickly we forgot all the chaos and inconvenience of construction, as we enjoyed the great new space of our house.
